For the last couple of years I ‘ve had the amazing opportunity to be a volunteer at one of FECEI conferences in Madrid. As a room coordinator I was assigned to a room and was responsible for welcoming the speakers and the audience. The best thing about being a room coordinator is the chance to talk to all those different and interesting speakers who share their knowledge and innovative approaches in the classroom. As a volunteer you also have the privilege of sharing a bite to eat and a glass of wine or juice with all the participants in the conference. The FECEI team is great, well organized and friendly. I had an unforgettable experience there and I will definitely do it again!

Organizing the speakers for the FECEI conference and taking part in the conference preparation gave me lots of opportunity to liaise and work with people from all over. The day before the conference was a mad rush to get everything ready – all hands on board, a bit of confusion and lots of hard work. The day of the conference meant a very early start and a lot of teamwork, running around putting up posters, sorting out attendance lists and checking equipment in each room. Everyone involved in registration, room coordination, IT, … is tired but happy by the end of the day with a great feeling of satisfaction after having pulled together to make the event work.

Being a volunteer means, friends, peer teamwork, experience, seeing things from another perspective, meeting new people, getting to work alongside well known authors, watching them in action, seeing how things are done in other areas of Spain and learning from this, going away with so much more than what you came with. Being appreciated for all you do, no matter how small this is or has been, it’s everything you could ever dream of if looking to teach English in a different way. It has made me a different person, seeing just how hard people work behind the scenes, the amount of time spent on making congresses work; something you will never ever appreciate if you have never volunteered. It is and has been the best experience in the teaching world I have ever come across. It has made me a better teacher and taught me to understand what goes on in the background and what we are missing out on. I can only say, never contemplate being a volunteer if the opportunity comes along, go for it!

As the conference coordinator for three years, there certainly were some stressful times. But each and every year, the enthusiasm of the team around me, the volunteers, the speakers, the sponsors, and the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the attendees always made the day thoroughly enjoyable and made the whole process totally worthwhile.

People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. Whichever the reason, FECEI’s volunteering activities offers you a great opportunity to learn from the best professionals while helping your community. The role gives you the chance to connect and contact teachers you would never meet under normal circumstances. I volunteered at last year’s Spring Annual Convention, got the chance to hear first hand amazing talks and worked hand by hand with my new colleagues. Overall the experience is fulfilling – the events are organized in great detail and with passion. I recommend the experience of volunteering at all FECEI events.
